Former Rangers manager and Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has paid tribute to the Ibrox club for a touching tribute to the Hillsborough disaster.
Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst and club captain James Tavernier laid a wreath in honour of the 96 souls who lost their lives in the tragic events of 1989.
Stadium tragedies are something that Rangers are painfully familiar with the Ibrox Disaster of 1971 seeing 66 souls lost after a devastating crush in the New Year’s Day Old Firm derby.
It’s a nice touch from Rangers and something that went down well with ex-Ibrox gaffer Steven Gerrard, who branded the move “class” and shared a blue loveheart on Instagram.
Now at Aston Villa, Gerrard polarised Rangers fans when he left Ibrox for Villa Park during the international break in November last year.
However, as the dust has settled the Scouser remains warmly thought of at Ibrox as the man who restored the club’s European pride and delivered 55, stopping Celtic winning 10IAR in the process.
It has immortalised Steven Gerrard in the eyes of the Rangers support with the legendary former Liverpool midfielder previously claiming the Gers were one of “two teams” in his heart.
The ex-Anfield captain claims there are also similarities between the two clubs and cities of Liverpool and Glasgow.
“That’s one of the reasons I went for it [the Rangers job],” said Gerrard in an interview with the Guardian in 2018.
“Rangers are like Liverpool in many ways. The city, the people’s love for the club and the pressures are the same. I did it for 17 years as a professional and loved it, and I hope this starts a new journey.
“I’ve got two teams in my heart now. Rangers and Liverpool.”
Meanwhile, Rangers murmurs around a Premier League rival are surely a wind-up given the bad blood between all parties involved.
