St Johnstone draw exposed flaw in Rangers transfer policy

Rangers were busy in the January Transfer Window.
No one could argue that the club lacked ambition, either.
Even going after as celebrated a player as Jermain Defoe, was a bold move. To actually bring him to Ibrox, a major coup.

Yet, the abject performance against St Johnstone on Saturday, exposed a glaring area where the Gers went wrong in the market.
They didn’t get a genuine number 10.
Gerrard brought in a goalkeeper, defensive cover, a striker and packed the centre of midfield.

Yet, there’s still a lack of connection between the midfield and the central striker.

A quality number 10 could bring that fluidity that was so badly missing on Saturday.
Not having Alfredo Morelos, was obviously a big blow.
Yet, a club the size of Rangers cannot be bereft of ideas as soon as one man drops out of the side.

As Gerrard told RangersTV after the game, players are waiting for a run from Ryan Kent or when he’s available, a moment of brilliance from Morelos.
That was what saved them at McDiarmid Park in December, but there would be no repeat dose this time around.

Rangers don’t have a natural ‘trequartista’, with the vision and subtlety to regularly unlock defences.
There have been too many of ‘those games’ where things haven’t went right.
On each occasion, the missing ingredient has been creativity.
Criminally, that’s something the recruitment team failed to address in January.
