The SPFL are plotting to secure new powers which could force sides to forfeit matches if they cannot fulfil fixtures, the Daily Record reports.
The newspaper is claiming that a source within Hampden believes that with fears of more postponements due to Covid-19, the professional body wants permissions to hand out mandatory 3-0 defeats.
“This will be described as a consultation because the board has to establish if there is an appetite for it to be put to a vote,” claims the source.
““It has the support of a number of clubs already but it’s obviously a sensitive issue. The main concern is the number of Covid-related postponements is highly likely to increase.”
There are obviously potentially league-defining ramifications if these powers are to be handed to the SPFL with matches already postponed this season.
So far there have not been points awarded due to postponements but in the Scottish Betfred Cup we have seen teams forced to forfeit if they cannot fulfil fixtures.
Rangers are yet to be directly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic but there’s a general acceptance that it is an inevitability rather than something we can avoid.
Is it right to have a league season defined by teams missing players through Covid or should the SPFL be bending over backwards to fulfill fixtures?
The report also comes after BBC Scotland claimed Rangers were to be consulted over what happens should the season be curtailed by the virus.
At this point the league season is not believed to be under threat but the powers that be want to avoid a repeat of the end of season debacle from the last campaign.
