SPFL chief to seek discussion with Rangers interim chairman Park

SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster has suggested he will seek out talks with Rangers interim chairman Douglas Park in the wake of Tuesday’s EGM, as quoted by the Daily Record.

A resolution put forward by the Gers, Hearts and Stranraer calling for an independent investigation into the governing body’s April ballot to end the lower-league season, was defeated.

13 clubs voted in favour but two abstained and the remaining 27 voted against.

The vote came after an extended war of words between SPFL figures and various member clubs, with Doncaster and Park key players at the centre of the debate.

The SPFL chief is now urging everyone to move on and says he would like to make positive steps to mend his relationship with the key Ibrox figure.

“Yes, I think all of us actually should look at ways in which we can help to heal divisions and bring people back together,” said Doncaster, as quoted by the Daily Record. “We are living in extraordinary times where you can’t get around the table and meet people face to face.”

“We’re all in lockdown and all isolated so we’re having to use phones, e-mails and video conferences rather than sitting down with people. That presents its own challenge but I do think it’s important that all us reflect on what we can do to help heal what has gone on over these past two months and help the game to move forward.

“We’re much better able to ensure that the game survives if we are all working together.”

Verdict

With this message, Doncaster has backed up SPFL Chairman Murdoch MacLennan’s comments made in the immediate aftermath of the EGM.

As far as the governing body’s hierarchy are concerned, the matter has been resolved and now it’s time to move on.

However, based on the tone and language used in Rangers’ statement on Monday evening [Rangers.co.uk], there are altogether different feelings at Ibrox.

Rangers clearly want to carry on the fight and while it’s uncertain what their next steps will be, it’s hard to see Doncaster and Park engaging in friendly discussions anytime soon.
