When word broke that Graeme Souness was involved in the recruitment of Philippe Clement, there was an assurance that the Rangers board had found the right man for the job.
The former Gers boss might not have worked at the sharp edge of football for the best part of 15 years but the perception was that he would have the best idea of which candidate would be the perfect fit for the Ibrox hot seat having sat there himself.
Unfortunately, Graeme Souness did what he has been doing for the last 15 years and gave his opinion on air and why Philippe Clement wasn’t his choice as Rangers manager but Frank Lampard instead.

Graeme Souness creates problem for new Rangers manager
It’s not a secret that he wanted Frank Lampard who has no discernible managerial CV.
Compare it to Philippe Clement’s and it’s borderline embarrassing how one sided a race it should have been.
Souness is, of course, entitled to his opinion, but why did he have to share it with the national media?
All Graeme Souness did was create negativity around the new Rangers manager that didn’t need to be there.
Philippe Clement’s first press conference since the revelation was always going to have an elephant in the room.
Mark Benstead of Sky Sports was the journalist to ask the question and, like a seasoned professional, Clement batted it away with consummate ease.
Benstead got his answer but the Belgian has been around long enough to know when a reporter is setting a trap.
Had Michael Beale been asked a similar question, an entirely different answer would have been expected given how open the previous manager was.
If Graeme Souness is to get an ambassadorial role, be appointed as a consultant or something bigger, he will have to realise that Rangers business isn’t public business.
That he has a responsibility to the club first and foremost, not his media profile.
