Should Rangers move for Charlie Adam?

Charlie Adam has told fans that he would be open to a return to Rangers “if the opportunity ever came up”.

In a Q&A on his Instagram, the 32-year-old midfielder admitted he’d be open to the prospect of returning to his boyhood heroes.

Adam, who is yet to play for Stoke this season, joined Rangers in 2003 as a youth from Dundee. He went on to make 88 appearances for the Gers, scoring 18 goals.

But how would he fit into Gerrard’s team?

Experience and ability in abundance, but no longer the legs

Charlie Adam is a top, top professional and will look after himself, but at 32, the midfielder will be more Andrea Pirlo than Frank Lampard.

He has a peach of a left foot and can shoot, cross and take free kicks better than just about anyone in the squad.

But the fact he’s not getting a game for Stoke should send alarm bells ringing. Adam is not quite as young as he once was and there would be questions over his ability to fit into Gerrard’s pressing style.

Adam has also played over 200 Premier League appearances including 11 last season.

Whilst I do think Rangers could use some more homegrown experience in midfield, if the choice is between Adam or Davis – I’d chose Davis.

Loyalty, ability and passion the trademarks of Adam

Adam was a very likeable player at Ibrox and two moments stood out during his time here. There was the time he put the ball under the wall from a free kick and past Artur Boruc. And that superb right foot, sweeping finish against Stuttgart in the Champions League.

When he left, I was a little gutted but Rangers had strong options in Pedro Mendes, Kevin Thomson and Barry Ferguson.

Since he left, he’s played for only three clubs. A stunning three seasons at Blackpool – were he guided them to promotion and then scored 12 goals the following season. One with English giants Liverpool where he played alongside “idol” and now Rangers manager Steven Gerrard. And Stoke, with where he is now in his seventh season.

For each, and Rangers, he played with loyalty, passion and most influentially, ability.
