Seven Rangers youth players have been called up to the Scotland U19s squad as Rangers boast the most members of the latest squad.

Defenders Jordan Houston, Matthew Shiels and Lewis Mayo make the team alongside youth prospect Stephen Kelly in midfield. Rangers youth players also add firepower up front with a further three included from positions in the final third.

The U19s will play three games in six days against Wales, San Marino and Sweden.

The squad also includes ex-Rangers prospect Billy Gilmour.

Great strides being taken in the academy

These call-ups are reflective of the superb work of everyone at the academy behind the scenes at Rangers. More than that they’re testament to the superb work of these young players. Rangers dominate this group and it’s a very promising sign for the future.

The Rangers academy underwent a reshuffle at the beginning of last season, with many young players travelling overseas to challenge themselves against Europe’s top sides. The best result of the lot was a 2-1 victory over German giants Bayern Munich last season.

This culture shift is clearly reaping rewards with many of those involved in this Scotland youth squad knocking on the first team door at Ibrox.

Glenn Middleton and Stephen Kelly have already broken into the first team this season.
