Scottish Gas Scottish Cup fifth round draw: Rangers vs Queen’s Park

Philippe Clement wants Rangers to rebuild the sort of mentality that saw anything less than a league title every season written off as a failure.

The manager still has a very long way to go, even if defeat in the last two domestic cup finals came in games that his team should have won and were unlucky to lose.

The how and the why is ultimately irrelevant though with the Scottish Gas Scottish Cup the last, realistic, opportunity for Rangers to win silverware this season.

Scottish Cup draw: Rangers vs Queen’s Park

Three Scottish Premiership teams exited the competition with an open draw that still sees plenty of lower league opposition.

Rangers, after a kind draw in the last round against Fraserburgh, will face Queen’s Park – currently fifth in the Scottish Championship – in the fifth round at Ibrox on the weekend of the 8th of February.

Rangers have won the Scottish Cup 34 times, but there is more than individual cup glory at stake now.

Celtic have caught the Light Blues on 119 major trophies and, with the league all but decided, keeping the gap down to one must now be the aim.

At Hampden in 2023/24, Clement saw a goal disallowed for the softest of touches from Nicolas Raskin on Joe Hart before Jack Butland spilled a long-range effort at the feet of Adam Idah for the only goal.

A harsh lesson in how winning is all that matters and nobody remembers the performance.

Can you remember Rangers last five successful Scottish Cup wins?

There is still a long way to go, but these are the last five Scottish Cup finals when Rangers emerged victorious:

2001/02 (beat Celtic 3-2 in the final)

2002/03 (beat Dundee FC 1-0 in the final)

2007/08 (beat Queen of the South 3-2 in the final)

2008/09 (beat Falkirk 1-0 in the final)

2021/22 (beat Hearts 2-0 after extra time in the final)

Can Rangers go one better than last season?
