Scottish football fans will be allowed back into a stadium this weekend as Ross County were given the go-ahead to have 300 fans in their ground against Livingston.

Rangers fans have been locked out of Ibrox since March and will be eager to see a phased return of supporters at any level sooner rather than later.

With the Highlands put into tier one of the Scottish government’s lockdown restrictions the match can be played in front of a limited crowd under the guidance.

According to Sky Sports, the Ross County chairman Roy McGregor had been looking to get 750 supporters into the Global Energy Stadium for the match.

This was after an initial 300-fan test event took place against Celtic in September.

But the Staggies will have to make do with 300 fans again in a move which will be viewed as a positive across Scottish football.

This is a sentiment echoed by SPFL chief Neil Doncaster.

“I’m sure this news will be cheered by every player, official and fan in our game,” said Doncaster [SPFL].

“All clubs in Scotland are desperate to get fans back safely in the open air and we are very grateful to the Scottish Government for approving this crucial first step towards the return of supporters to every ground.

“All of us in the SPFL have missed the enormous difference which our passionate supporters bring to the game, not to mention the absolutely crucial matchday revenue, and everyone involved will be working flat-out to ensure that the return of fans to the Global Energy Stadium goes smoothly this Friday.”

With Glasgow currently in tier 3 of restrictions, Rangers are still a couple of steps away from reintroducing fans but this news will be viewed as promising.

Every Rangers fan might be desperate to get back into Ibrox this season but according to a leading ex-player the Ibrox side is benefitting from playing behind-closed-doors.
