Nottingham Forest defender Scott McKenna has been talking about his future amid links to Rangers in January.

The 27-year-old Scotland international centre-back is currently on loan at FC Copenhagen after an early-season bust-up at the City Ground saw him banished from the club’s squad.

Almost four years on from when he left Aberdeen for the legendary English club it now looks like an exit is destined at the end of the season when McKenna’s contract expires.

But Scott McKenna isn’t thinking about that just yet in comments which come after extensive links to both Rangers and Celtic in the January transfer window.

Speaking to Aberdeen paper the Press & Journal, Scott McKenna insists he’s just focused on making the most of his six months in Denmark before rushing into a decision.

With his eyes on a Danish Superliga winner’s medal, the former Dons star is also fully focused on earning a seat on the Scotland plane to Germany for Euro 2024.

“I just need to focus on trying to play well,” said McKenna. “Then hopefully winning a league championship with Copenhagen. That’s all I’m really thinking about now.

“And hopefully my performances will be enough to give (Scotland manager) Steve Clarke a consideration of selecting me for the Euro 2024 squad. It is exciting – there’s a lot to look forward to.”

Scott McKenna moved on loan to FC Copenhagen in January and is set to face off against Manchester City in the Champions League this week.

It comes after the defender played in the club’s 3-1 first leg defeat to the Citizens in Denmark almost three weeks ago.

Ibrox transfer would risk Aberdeen ire

With Scott McKenna’s future undecided as things stand, we suspect transfer links between Rangers and the Nottingham Forest defender won’t be too far away come the summer.

Old Firm rivals Celtic – for whom McKenna holds a childhood affinity – are also likely to be mentioned after Brendan Rodgers failed with a £5m bid for the centre-back in 2019.

The P&J report also goes on to discuss the extra £1.75m McKenna secured for Aberdeen following his transfer to Forest in 2020, which was worth an initial £3m.

Raking in more based on Premier League promotion and then subsequent survival, McKenna has suggested it’s the least he could do for his old side.

Something tells us all that financial goodwill will evaporate if the defender ever signs on at Rangers but you never know what might happen in the summer.
