Rangers have received a massive boost with the news that Scott Arfield is fit for Sunday’s Betfred Cup clash with Aberdeen.
Steven Gerrard confirmed the news during his pre-match press conference for Sunday’s game. Arfield is expected to come straight back into the side.
The Gers have certainly missed Arfield’s influence in the last two matches against Spartak Moscow and Hamilton. Gerrard has confirmed that his midfielder made it through training with no issues at all.
Low points
Despite the positive of Arfield being back, however, it’s disappointing to hear the news about Graham Dorrans and Borna Barisic. Barisic was expected to miss out regardless, but Dorrans’ news of needing knee surgery is a massive blow.
The midfielder had made a steady recovery, and looked particularly impressive against Villarreal. But, it appears his knee appears to be giving him issues once again as he gets set for a spell on the sidelines.
Arfield, meanwhile, is one of the outside contenders for a spot in the striking role. He has the attributes to take control and bring others into play. It’s still looking more likely to be Eros Grezda, however.
Rangers had to monitor their Canada star closely given the fact that he tweaked his hamstring on international duty. Gerrard took every precaution in keeping him out of the Hamilton and Spartak matches. It seems as though he’ll be ready to be thrown straight in against the Dons, however.
Question marks around who will be the man to drop out is an interesting one. You have to imagine it could be Ovie Ejaria, but Gerrard could also take out Lassana Coulibaly and pull Ejaria back alongside Ryan Jack. Jack was mightily impressive against Spartak, and most likely won’t be dropped for the weekend.
Regardless of how Gerrard lines up, it’s great news for Gers fans that Arfield is back once more.
