Scott Arfield makes Rangers call for teammate hoping to follow in footsteps

Of all the players who will leave Rangers this summer, Scott Arfield is the one who can hold his head the highest as he clears out his locker.

The 34-year old midfielder, who scored 43 goals for the club in five seasons, has been popular with managers and fans alike since arriving from Burnley in 2018 and deserved to go out on a high.

The team maybe let him down but Rangers will miss Scott Arfield, however, a part of him could live on through Fashion Sakala, as revealed to Rangers TV.

The former Canada international’s famous salute celebration was seen nine times this season, most famously against Liverpool before things went pair shaped.

Speaking to the club’s official media channel, when asked about the ritual, Arfield has claimed that Sakala is welcome to it now, on one condition:

“The story isn’t that exciting, I made it up to be exciting and it doesn’t even make sense to be fair!

“But it’s iconic, isn’t it, when I walk around and see wee boys and girls doing the salute, it’s an amazing feeling. My wee girls love it and Fashion Sakala really loved it as well.

“He says he’s going to take it and carry it on with Rangers but I don’t think that is true! He needs to score more goals and if he scores more goals than me, he can keep it!”

As honest as ever, Scott Arfield also said that Rangers forward Sakala has to be playing if he is to get the chance to score more goals.

Not a dig, but Arfield will know what the manager’s plans are for next season.

Craig Moore has also suggested that the Zambian could be one of the players sold to make room for new additions.

With nine goals this campaign, Arfield did everything he could to earn a new deal but the simple fact is, there isn’t going to be room for him.

Tom Lawrence will be back, Kieran Dowell has signed and Alex Lowry won’t be as unlucky with injury and personal tragedy, his time will come.

The salute has been seen in Old Firm derbies and on the biggest European stages, if Sakala has half as many high profile moments paying tribute, then he’ll be doing alright.
