Sam Lammers sends Rangers message as threat of £30m Champions League tussle looms

Rangers spent a good portion of the summer waiting for new FC Twente striker Sam Lammers to find a new club.

Now he could be about to stand between the Ibrox club and a £30m Champions League fortune.

Dutch hitman Lammers joined Rangers last summer from Italian side Atalanta for a reported fee of £3.5m but struggled with the intensity of life in Glasgow.

Eventually being farmed out to FC Utrecht, a return to the Eredivisie looked destined this summer but several would-be suitors couldn’t meet Sam’s controversially high wage demands.

That was until Champions League hopefuls FC Twente entered the mix with Sam Lammers now officially off the mark in the Netherlands to send Rangers a firm message.

Lammers’ dream Twente start

Having scored 11 Eredivisie goals whilst out on loan at FC Utrecht last season, several suitors were eyeing a move for Sam Lammers this summer.

But it was FC Twente who stumped up a reported £2.7m to bring the striker from Ibrox and it’s an investment which is already being repaid only eight minutes into the new season.

Sam Lammers opened the scoring for FC Twente in their Eredivisie opener against NEC Nijmegen with the Dutch outfit going on to win 2-1 on the day.

The 27-year-old forward found himself all alone in the six-yard box to tap home as easy a goal as the lanky hitman will ever score.

Lammers has now started as he means to go on back in the Netherlands with this early season strike starting to justify the Dutch transfer tussle for his signature.

Rangers face Champions League challenge

Rangers may well be in line for an unexpected Sam Lammers reunion should things go to plan for the Ibrox side and FC Twente this week.

The Gers are currently tied at 1-1 with Ukrainian outfit Dynamo Kiev in Champions League QR3 with the return leg in Scotland this coming Tuesday.

Rangers manager Philippe Clement has called on the Gers support to make some noise at Hampden as the club look to reach the Playoff stage.

And lying in wait for Rangers should they overcome Dynamo Kiev could be FC Twente and Sam Lammers.

That’s because Rangers or Dynamo Kiev will play the winners of FC Salzburg v FC Twente for a shot in the revamped Champions League.

Salzburg currently lead the tie 2-1 but FC Twente are hosting the Austrians in the Netherlands this week with all eyes on Sam Lammers as he looks to fire the club to the Playoff.

It means we could see the ex-PSV striker back in Scotland, albeit Hampden, just weeks after his Ibrox exit and it’s not the only potential subplot surrounding the tie.

Rangers also poached FC Twente captain Robin Pröpper this summer and the 30-year-old Dutch defender could also be in line to return to his former club.
