Rangers sporting director Ross Wilson has suggested that new scouts will be hired by the club following the global health crisis, as quoted by the Scottish Sun.

With the UK still observing a state of lockdown, football is very much on the backburner with Rangers’ last fixture coming way back on 12 March against Bayer Leverkusen.

However, there is still work going on behind the scenes to ensure the club is in the best possible shape when things eventually begin to return to normal.

There’s currently major uncertainty over what the next transfer window will look like, but Wilson has recently taken steps to improve the club’s talent-spotting department.

“There are so many facets to the job,” he said, as quoted by the Scottish Sun. “When I took over six months ago, I went on record as saying the foundations were strong.”

“There was a lot of work to do, a lot of building to do.

“One of the areas I was determined to build was our scouting network and we’ve been doing that in a big way.

“We have put a lot of work into building up our scouting team to where I want it to be. There will be people joining us post-coronavirus.”

Verdict

It’s encouraging that improvements are still being made during these unprecedented times, and the fact that new staff are still being recruited suggests the club is in a relatively secure financial position.

For a side like Rangers, where standards are set high but transfer budgets are relatively tight, it’s crucial to have a strong scouting network capable of unearthing hidden gems.

For example, the signing of Alfredo Morelos from relative unknowns HJK Helsinki for just £1 million back in 2017 has proved inspired.

The Colombian striker was recommended by then-assistant coach, Jonatan Johansson, but his transfer has set the standard.

The Gers need to make every signing count in their quest to return to winning ways and Wilson will be hoping his new recruits can play a big role going forward.
