Robin Propper was heralded as a top Rangers signing when he was confirmed in the summer.

The Dutch centre-half was snapped up for a nominal fee from FC Twente with fans delighted to see what was thought of as a readymade starter arriving.

The 31-year-old had been the captain of his former club and was brought in by manager Philippe Clement in a bid to shore up his backline having already green-lit Connor Goldson’s exit to Aris Limassol.

Propper has now made 13 appearances so far this term but some fans and pundits have questioned his abilities as well as his suitability for the club and the division.

And now former Motherwell defender Stephen Craigan has described the big man as a “downgrade” on Goldson who had established himself at Ibrox over six years.

Craigan, an ex-defender himself, has noted specific examples of where Propper has been shown up including in Gers‘ recent narrow 2-1 win over St Mirren in Glasgow.

The Northern Irishman accused the player of being unable to RUN as he tore the centre-half to shreds.

“He arrived with a reputation of when he left the Netherlands that it was a huge loss to the club and how would they recover. This was their leader and best player,” Craigan told BBC Sportsound.

Propper has been told he ‘can’t run’ and is a lesser player than Connor Goldson

“He looks like he has lost his legs, he looks like he can’t run. [Toyosi] Olusanya last week on a number of occasions just brushed him out of the way and simply ran beyond him.

“That is not what you want from a number one centre-half.

“That is the reason why they got rid of Connor Goldson.

Stephen Craigan accused Propper of not being good enough for Rangers

“They felt as if his better years where beyond him and he was going to struggle at a certain level and needed a little more pace at the back.

“He is almost sort of carbon copy of Connor Goldson – there is no real difference.

“In fact I would say Connor Goldson is a better player. So why would you trade one to bring another in when you are not improving that area of the team?”
