Former Rangers defender Calvin Bassey is being backed to leave Ajax for a mystery Premier League club this summer.
That is the verdict of Dutch reporter Mike Verweij, who has been quoted by FC Update as saying that Bassey will be on the move.
Verweij is one of the top reporters in the Netherlands and he believes an unnamed Premier League club are ready to sign Bassey.
Verweij claims that Ajax had an offer of around €23million (£20million) for Bassey – and he has it ‘in black and white’.
The De Telegraaf reporter adds that he doesn’t know the club but the expectation is that Ajax will have a chance to cash in.
Verweij adds that he believes new Ajax director of football Sven Mislintat will now decide to sell Bassey even if the defender wants to stay.
“The offer is still 23 million euros. There are doubts about it,” said Verweij. “I have it in black and white. I still don’t know which English club it is, but I think that club will come back. At least that is the expectation,” he added.
“I think Sven Mislintat will decide to sell him, although Bassey is still very keen to show himself,” he added.

Rangers will watch Calvin Bassey situation
Bassey’s move to Ajax has become a little bit sad to see.
The Nigerian defender left Rangers in a big-money move last summer having been sensational in the Gers’ run to the Europa League final.
Heading to Ajax seemed to be the next big step in Bassey’s career but this has been a mixed season.
Most of the Scottish coverage has centred around Bassey being a flop in the Netherlands, but he does deserve some time.
Bassey needed time to become a Rangers star after moving from the Leicester City development ranks.
Heading to Ajax is a huge step and Dutch football is different to Scottish action, so Bassey shouldn’t just be written off.
Bassey is undoubtedly a big talent and we’re backing him to shine down the line – whether that’s with Ajax or another club.
Rangers will be keeping an eye on this situation closely though, as they surely hold a sell-on clause as part of the deal.
Any deal for Bassey to leave Ajax after just one year would provide Rangers with a welcome cash boost, but most Gers fans will surely just want the best for him wherever he is playing.
