The Scottish Sun reported earlier this month that inbound Rangers Director of Football, Ross Wilson, was considering bringing in Hibernian Head of Recruitment, Graeme Mathie, as he looks to strengthen behind the scenes operations at Ibrox.

However, developments on Friday have ensured that move is off the table.

That’s because Mathie, who was also said to be a target for Kilmarnock [Edinburgh Evening News], has been internally promoted at Easter Road to become the club’s first-ever Sporting Director.

He claims that despite the speculation, this was the role he really wanted.

“The most important thing to say is that I was never looking to leave the club,” he told HibsTV. “It’s a club where I’ve felt genuinely trusted, valued and supported to do the job that I have been doing and these three things are really important to me.”

“It was a good opportunity to take a real step back and consider the job here and I wouldn’t have taken it if I didn’t think I could make a difference and help to take it forward.”

According to Hibernianfc.co.uk, Mathie has been tasked with ‘playing a key role in the creation of a consistently successful new era at Easter Road Stadium.’

He’s due to begin his new role in January.

If Wilson had been looking at bringing the former centre-back to Rangers, he’ll now have to look elsewhere.

The former Saints Head of Recruitment comes with a big reputation having previously worked with Falkirk, Watford and Huddersfield before moving to St Mary’s and he’ll be eager to take the footballing department to the next level.
