Reported Rangers target Daniel Johnson missed the EFL Championship match between Preston and Norwich City on Saturday with a muscle injury, according to Lancs Live.

The Gers have been heavily linked with a multi-million-pound move for the Jamaican [Daily Record], although Preston recently shut down rumours that a deal had been agreed, hinting Rangers would need to improve their offer in order to land the player.

The 27-year-old was left out of the North End squad for their first league game of the season last Saturday but returned to action in midweek in the EFL Cup.

Johnson came off the bench with 15 minutes to play against Derby County and slotted home a dramatic injury-time winner from the spot to secure his club’s place in the next round.

However, he didn’t make Alex Neil’s matchday squad on Saturday afternoon, with Lancs Live citing a groin injury as the reason for his absence.

Johnson missed a number of fixtures around Christmas last season, but still racked up 33 Championship appearances, scoring an impressive 12 goals and notching eight assists.

Preston managed a 2-2 draw at Carrow Road in his absence, with former Celtic winger Scott Sinclair amongst those on the scoresheet.

It’s unclear how serious Johnson’s knock is at this stage, but with the transfer window entering its final stages, he’ll need to shake it off quickly or risk missing out on a big move.

Earlier on Saturday, Preston expert, Olly Dawes of Deepdale Digest, spoke to Rangers News to give his thoughts on what Johnson could offer the Gers should the two clubs eventually agree a deal.
