New Rangers striker Kemar Roofe has taken to Instagram to express his pride at making his Ibrox debut – even if he was disappointed in his performance.
The 27-year-old forward joined the Gers for a reported £3.5m earlier in the month on the same day as Swiss striker Cedric Itten.
Coming on as a second-half substitute for Steven Gerrard’s side, Roofe’s biggest involvement was a crunching challenge on him from St. Johnstone’s Liam Gordon which probably should’ve seen a red card.
The striker’s comments on being disappointed will certainly be viewed as a positive by Rangers fans who want their players striving for the highest standards.
Roofe comes highly recommended after the nimble forward impressed during a spell with Leeds United before joining Anderlecht in a reported £7m deal.
Things didn’t go to plan for Roofe in Belgium as injury interrupted his spell on the continent but Steven Gerrard is convinced he can be a big player for Rangers.
“Roofe needs minutes,” said Gerrard [Glasgow Times].
“I said the other day that he is ten days or a couple of weeks behind the group.
“But he picks up clever positions and gets shots off early. It’s only a matter of time before we see the real Kemar when he is 100 per cent fit, sharp and match ready.
“We are pushing him hard in training. He probably did extra in training [on Tuesday] because we knew this would just be a cameo. Thankfully we could get him 30 minutes.
“We have a game behind closed doors next week for the likes of Kemar and we’ll do everything we can to get him up to speed.”
Kemar Roofe came through the ranks at West Bromwich Albion and after a series of loan spells ended up with Oxford United.
After impressing in League Two Roofe earned a move to Leeds United before moving to Anderlecht and eventually Rangers.
