A Bild report has provided an update on Borussia Dortmund’s stance on Marco Rose as the second leg of their Europa League knockout playoff against Rangers nears.
Rose watched on helplessly for most of the first leg at Signal Iduna Park on Thursday evening, as Rangers dished out a shock 4-2 drubbing.
It was the latest of several recent disappointments for Dortmund, who could only finish third in their Champions League group and who lost 5-2 at home to Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga earlier this month.
After the defeat to Rangers, Sky Germany reported that crisis talks were held, during which Rose was asked to give an explanation to key figures at the club.
Sporting director Michael Zorc has since said that he was “ashamed” about the “embarrassing” and “disgraceful” performance.
However, he claimed that there had been “no discussion about the coach”.
German outlet Bild have now backed up that claim, reporting that Dortmund’s hierarchy are still ‘convinced’ that ex-Red Bull Salzburg and Borussia Monchengladbach boss is the right man to lead the club forward.
‘The bosses are still convinced of Rose, measure him against the Champions League qualification in the league,’ reads a section of the report [translated].
‘Dortmund plans to initiate the change with Rose in the summer.’
It looks like there won’t be a sacking following Rangers’ brilliant win in Germany, then, with Rose set to take charge of Dortmund against his old club Monchengladbach in the Bundesliga on Sunday before they jet off to Glasgow for the second leg.
If his players don’t manage to turn to tie around at Ibrox, though, the scrutiny and pressure on his position is bound to increase considerably.
Meanwhile, a sporting director has admitted that a Rangers-linked player could become a free agent at the end of the season.
