Rangers may face a fight to keep defender Calvin Bassey this summer, as Premier League side West Ham are reportedly interested in signing the player.

The club missed out on Bassey when he was at Leicester in the first half of 2020 and is keeping tabs on the 22-year-old amid some impressive performances this season, that’s according to Wayne Veysey at Football Insider.

The Hammers are in the market for a left-footed defender in January, but it looks like David Moyes is aiming to keep the finances ready for a move in the summer.

Rangers would make a significant profit on the player, having signed him on a pre-contract in 2020, with the club paying training compensation to the Premier League side.

Bassey has impressed in his season and a half at the Ibrox side. He was the understudy to Borna Barisic at left-back last season and he always performed well when called upon as he won a league winners medal.

This season has been a different challenge for the defender, as an injury crisis in the middle of the defence saw Giovanni van Bronckhorst move Bassey to feature alongside Connor Goldson at the heart of the backline.

There have been a couple of mistakes, with the most recent coming against Ross County, but it has been a learning curve and these performances are obviously being noticed if West Ham is after the player.

Rangers have a few talented individuals in their ranks at left-back, with Kevin Ciubotaru and Johnly Yfeko recently arriving at the academy, the position looks like it could be in safe hands.

Hopefully, the lure of Champions League football and trophies will keep Bassey at the club for the long haul.

Meanwhile, Leeds boss confirms that Rangers-linked Crysencio Summerville wanted to leave the club in January.
