A leading Scottish newspaper has claimed that the upcoming match between Rangers and Celtic at Celtic Park could be cancelled due to coronavirus fears.
The first Old Firm match of the season is set to go ahead on the 17th of October at 12pm with fears growing that fans may gather in households or pubs to watch the match.
According to the Scottish Sun, the Old Firm could be affected as politicians try to work out how best to curb the growing rise in Covid-19 infections across the UK.
The Glasgow Times has also ran a story, quoting the Daily Mail, which suggests the government are certainly open to the idea of cancelling the fiery fixture.
They claim that the fears of public health officials include the idea that supporters may gather in households to watch the match or that some could show up outside the ground.
Nicola Sturgeon addressed the Scottish Parliament this afternoon and revealed that the rescheduled date given for a phased fan return was to be pushed back from 5th October.
The First Minister gave the Scottish Premiership the go-ahead to continue with pilot events also pushed back with a view to being reviewed in three weeks.
Addressing the Scottish Parliament, Sturgeon said [BBC Scotland]:
“It’s important I indicate today that the route map changes with an indicative date of October 5 are unlikely now to go ahead on that timescale.”
Prime Minister Boris Johnson has also revealed that plans to bring fans back to England in October have been called off.
“We have to acknowledge the spread of the virus is now affecting our ability to reopen large sporting events,” said Johnson [BBC Sports].
