The referee and VAR for the Premier Sports Cup last 16 tie between Rangers and St Johnstone have been announced by the SFA.

The Light Blues went straight into the hat for the opening knockout round of the competition having reached the Champions League qualifiers with a second-placed Scottish Premiership finish last season.

Rangers also finished runners-up to Celtic in the Scottish Cup final but are the current holders of the League Cup having beaten Aberdeen 1-0 last December.

A good start to this season’s Premier Sports Cup journey would be welcomed as Philippe Clement’s side take on the Perth Saints this weekend.

Below are the confirmed refereeing officials for the tie.

Rangers vs St Johnstone officials announced

Matthew MacDermid has been appointed the man in the middle for the cup clash. Ross Macleod and Craig Ferguson will be the assistant referees.

Greg Aitken will be the VAR while Alan Mulvanny has been confirmed as his assistant.

MacDermid has presided over five Rangers matches across his career as a referee, as per Transfermarkt data. Two of those came in 2023 and both were against St Mirren.

The other three have come this year versus St Johnstone, Ross County and most recently Dundee in May when Rangers won 5-2 at Ibrox.

MacDermid awarded Rangers two penalties in the game against the McDiarmid Park side with James Tavernier converting both in a 3-0 February win.

He also granted Rangers a spot-kick in the away fixture against the Staggies. Tavernier dispatched but Gers lost the game 3-2 in April.

Rangers vs St Johnstone details

This weekend’s Premier Sports last 16 clash will be played at Hampden Park due to the ongoing construction delays at Ibrox.

Kick-off is scheduled for 17:45 BST on Saturday, August 17 and the game will be broadcast live on Premier Sports 1.

Rangers last faced St Johnstone in the League Cup back in September 2015 when the Perth outfit recorded a 3-1 victory at Ibrox.

But Rangers have won 15 of their 18 overall League Cup clashes against St Johnstone – as per Fitbastats – and fans will be expecting Gers to make that 16 from 19 on Saturday.
