Referee insists Aberdeen star should’ve saw red v Rangers as injury-time olive branch snaps

Rangers v Aberdeen is ordinarily a full-bloodied affair and there were a few challenges of a red persuasion which drew a card from Kevin Clancy.

Kristers Tobers went in late on Ianis Hagi and had a yellow card flashed in his direction by the referee.

Leighton Clarkson also went in on late on Rangers star Ridvan Yilmaz and picked up a booking for his troubles.

And it’s that challenge from the ex-Liverpool youth which has drawn the attentions of Dermot Gallagher on Sky Sports Ref Watch.

Aberdeen star should’ve saw red v Rangers

Former Premier League whistler Dermot Gallagher reckons Leighton Clarkson ‘couldn’t argue’ had he seen red in the Scottish Premiership clash with Rangers.

The ‘studs up’ tackle received a yellow and VAR deemed the call sufficient but it’s one of those borderline decisions which probably wouldn’t have been overturned after the fact.

Dermot Gallagher reckons it’s a late challenge and that Leighton Clarkson is a lucky boy.

”I actually think this is a red card,” said Gallagher.

”But if you watch, I think what saves him, he slows up just before he gets there.

”Whether the referee thinks that’s stopped the intensity of the impact I don’t know.

”But I think if you plant your studs that high up on a player you run a massive risk.

”If he got a red card he couldn’t argue.”

Shock injury time call backfires at Ibrox

Rangers ran out comfortable 3-0 winners in the Scottish Premiership clash at Ibrox with not even Aberdeen’s rough challenges able to halt the Gers’ victory.

Kevin Clancy also raised a few eyebrows when he added on seven minutes of injury time with the scoreline poised at 1-0 to the Gers.

Rangers had enjoyed complete domination of Aberdeen and the decision to hand the Dons such an olive branch did raise suspicions.

The call eventually backfired, with Leon Balogun and Cyriel Dessers scoring in injury-time to add some gloss to Hamza Igamane’s first-half strike.
