Scottish referee Bobby Madden has been selected to referee Sunday’s Old Firm against Celtic as Glasgow’s big two get ready to lock horns once again.

The whistler sent off Alfredo Morelos and Andy Halliday in March’s 2-1 Old Firm defeat at Parkhead and has been selected for the crunch match.

With both sides winning their opening three games this is a huge chance to claim an early lead in the Scottish Premiership race.

Rangers, of course, have the advantage of playing at home, but the match is anything but decided before kick-off.

Both sides will be desperate to take advantage in the Ibrox pressure cooker and Madden will have to keep his cool in the stadium.

In these matches, referees are highly scrutinised and Madden will be experiencing the same this time around. There are always big decisions to make in Old Firm matches.

Madden has been outspoken about the lack of VAR in the Scottish game previously, claiming that a lack of technology hurts referees.

“For me, the biggest thing is just the credibility of the league. I mentioned at the end of last season that VAR is being used in countries like Malta and Georgia.

“And if you are sitting at home flicking between English, Spanish and German football with VAR then flick to Scottish football and you see a clear mistake where you think VAR will fix it and we don’t have it then it affects the credibility of the league,” said Beaton, as quoted by the Evening Times.

“The SFA and SPFL have their own priorities and need to see where this sits. The biggest issue comes down to funding.”
