The craziest thing about the link to Ravel Morrison?
There’s just about nothing substantial in it other than him inconspicuously following the club and several key, relatable figures on Instagram.
In this day in age, that’s generally as good as livestreaming contract negotiations.
Two of them – talented Englishmen Ryan Kent and Joe Worrall – are four years his junior. So he’s probably not linking up with old pals from his youth footballing days.
But these are players who’ve developed at Ibrox, players who would sell the club to Morrison. That doesn’t make anything concrete.
That said, the speculation has not been categorically denied by anyone at the club. Or any of the usual club insiders. With Ravel Morrison, I guess we’ll see when we see.
If rumours are true, does it represent a gamble?
Should any move come to fruition, then this would represent Steven Gerrard’s biggest signing gamble yet. More than that, if the Ravel Morrison that’s been “allegedly” Ravel Morrison-ing his entire career comes to Ibrox, Gerrard’s gambling with the dynamic of the squad.
Yet there’s a sense of genuine intrigue and excitement about the potential signing. This is a player Sir Alex Ferguson was blown away by. Someone who has left an impression with anyone who he’s played with.
But someone who has continuously let himself down. There is baggage here. Plenty of it. Not only that, but he’s underperformed in his career so far.
But at 25 he really does still have time to turn it around.
At Ibrox, should he knuckle down and focus on the task at hand, he could be a hero. We’re a big club. This is a big stage. It could be the making of him. There’s also fewer better mentors to Ravel than the greatest English midfielder of a generation.
If Gerrard thinks he’s up to the task, who are we to doubt him?
If he can get this to work, what a player Rangers might have on their hands. For relative peanuts we could have a superb talent. A six-month loan deal is actually not a terrible prospect at all. It protects all sides and lets us see how Morrison copes with Ibrox. Even if it might be a gamble.
Who knows, we might wind up signing him on a full-time basis come June.
That is, if we’re even interested in the player at all.
