Rangers would benefit if a radical plan reportedly proposed by SPFL League Two strugglers Brechin City came to fruition.
The Daily Record reports that Brechin have suggested that the SPFL pyramid playoff between the team that finishes bottom of League Two and either the Highland or Lowland League champions, should be scrapped for this season.
Citing disparities between the number of matches played by the sides who would be competing in the play-off, the City say it would be ‘unfair’ if it went ahead and have suggested an alternative plan.
They reportedly want no relegation from League Two this season and to simply promote both Highland League champions Brora Rangers and Lowland League champions Kelty Hearts into an enlarged fourth tier ahead of next season.
League Two would then be increased to a 16-team division from 2022/23, with Rangers and Celtic Colts teams joining alongside two further fifth tier sides.
The Gers and the Hoops have been campaigning for the introduction of Colts teams to the pyramid for some time, but they have had no success to date and the latest formal reconstruction proposal reportedly won’t even reach a vote, with a number of Premiership clubs said to be against the plans [The Scotsman].
Therefore, the Old Firm clubs may well be pleased to have received support from Brechin City in the form of a new proposal.
However, the chances of the plan getting off the ground are minimal.
It has already received heavy criticism from some fellow member clubs, including East Stirlingshire, with many simply seeing it as an attempt to avoid a deserved relegation.
Brechin are currently bottom of League Two on just five points from 17 matches, with second-bottom Cowdenbeath eight points better off on 13.
Three Rangers youngsters are currently on loan at Glebe Park in centre-back Harris O’Connor, full-back Adam Devine and striker Chris McKee.
