When news broke of Rangers interest in Hearts centre back John Souttar, many Rangers fans thought it a strong move by the club.
Here’s a young international defender, capable on the ball and with plenty of room to grow. The idea is that Souttar would eventually be moved on for a higher price and represent good business.
It looks a shrewd move and the kind of name we should perhaps be looking to replace the outgoing Joe Worrall.

But it’s only a shrewd move for the right price. The Evening Times originally claimed Rangers would need to cough up £2m for his services. A decent outlay for someone who hopefully makes you upwards of three times that amount in two years.
Yet a report linking the player
Whilst Souttar is undoubtedly a talented player, there’s no way he is the finished article. For £5m Rangers need to be signing a defensive rock who can lead us to 55.
Not a 22-year-old who’s just about ready to step up to a higher level in his career.
Whilst John Souttar would represent a smart piece of business by Rangers, it only does so if it is for the right price.

If Hearts are demanding £5m – and Derby are willing to pay it – it’s no great loss to Rangers. We’d be quite correct to turn our attention elsewhere.
Perhaps to an Eastern centre half available on a free and interesting our Old Firm rivals Celtic?
