The Rangers women’s team suffered a hammering at the hands of Glasgow City on Sunday afternoon at the Hummel Training Centre.

Earlier in the day, RangersTV spoke to three new signings, two of whom, Lisa Martinez and Daina Bourma, made their Gers debuts.

However, it wasn’t the happiest of first outings, as the team were downed 4-0.

It could have been a whole lot worse though, as Glasgow City already held their four-goal advantage at half-time.

Therefore, coach Gregory Vignal was eager to look at the positives.

Rangers women’s team suffer defeat but salvage pride

“We lost of course but I am really really pleased with the girls because the second half I think we were really good,” the Frenchman told Rangers.co.uk. “We conceded stupid goals, set pieces, and this is something we need to work on but in terms of the game model I think that now they are starting to try to understand what we want.”

“It will take time because I told you right from the beginning I know where we are but if you have a look at the 90 minutes today it was pretty good.”

Verdict

It was only back in July that Vignal was appointed to the role, after the club made the decision to move it’s women’s section towards professional status [BBC Sport].

Therefore, it was always going to prove difficult to compete with more established sides in SWPL1 this season.

Ahead of today’s fixture, Glasgow City already sat top of the table with 12 wins from 12, while the Gers were down in fifth [Scotwomensfootball.com]. Therefore, this wasn’t a wholly unexpected result and the second-half clean sheet can be looked upon as a considerable positive.

The multiple new signings suggest a continued intent from the club to improve the squad, and as the season stretches on, we’ll hopefully see improvement in the results.
