The Rangers Women coach who planted a headbutt on his Celtic rival has caused much embarrassment to the club as headlines surrounding the incident go global.
Rangers Women assistant manager Craig McPherson has since been charged by the SFA for the moment against Celtic manager Fran Alonso, which came following a 1-1 draw earlier in the week.
The Gers ladies and SWPL Champions were bitterly disappointed to miss out on three points in the hotly contested Old Firm clash at Broadwood, with Brogan Hay’s first-half strike cancelled out by a 99th minute Caitlin Hayes equaliser for Celtic.
Coach embarrasses Rangers with headbutt incident
The match was certainly overshadowed by the incident, which has gone on to make news across world football with a clip of the headbutt going viral.
But more than that, the Rangers Women assistant coach has thoroughly embarrassed the club and offered the chance for our detractors to once again paint the Gers as a bad guys.
Now a hearing awaits for Craig McPherson who will likely spend a lengthy ban for the Rangers v Celtic headbutt incident if found guilty.
But whatever happens it is a lesson that when representing Rangers, upholding the club’s standards is imperative with the situation sending a ripple across the sport.
Whilst everyone makes mistakes, it will be hard for Craig McPherson to bounce back from this and Rangers fans will have one eye on the outcome of the case.
Rangers Women manager Malky Thomson also refused to be drawn on the incident after the match.
“Without me seeing it at all I don’t think I would comment on it,” said Thomson.
“If that is the case there will be an investigation into it and we will look at it.
“But listen, I think it was a great spectacle for the fans watching.
“It had everything, a bit of drama, it had two goals, it had everything about it.
“I’m a wee bit gutted, it does feel like a loss but we’re Rangers, we need to pick ourselves up and move on.”
