Rangers winger set to miss out on Leverkusen squad after Brentford outing

Rangers winger Brandon Barker looks set to miss out on a matchday squad spot against Bayer Leverkusen after playing for the Development team at Brentford on Tuesday evening.

The 23-year-old has been on the peripheries for much of his time in Glasgow following an August move from Manchester City, but Steven Gerrard has shown comparatively more faith in him in Europe than in domestic competition.

Barker made three appearances in the group stages, including starts in both the home and away fixtures against Porto.

In fact, he’s at least made the matchday squad for every game to date in the competition proper, apart from the away leg of the Round of 32 tie against Braga.

It looks as though he’s been deemed surplus to requirements for the last 16, though.

That’s because he played 90 minutes for the Gers Development XI in a friendly against Brentford B at Imber Court in Surrey on Tuesday evening.

Given that his presence on the trip to England will have seen him miss vital preparation sessions for the first leg, he’s clearly not in the manager’s plans for Thursday night.

With neither Jake Hastie nor Jordan Jones in the Europa League squad list, that means Ryan Kent and Sheyi Ojo are the only out-and-out wingers who can be involved against Leverkusen.
