BBC Scotland journalist Tom English has slammed Rangers right-back James Tavernier for the goal that Celtic scored against Michael Beale’s side in the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup on Sunday afternoon.

Rangers have suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Celtic at Hampden Park in Glasgow in the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup this afternoon.

Jota scored the only goal of the match in the 42nd minute.

The result means that Celtic remain in the hunt for the domestic treble this season.

Celtic have already won the Scottish League Cup this season, and they are set to clinch the Scottish Premiership title as well.

And now Ange Postecoglou’s side are into the final of the Scottish Cup at the expense of Rangers.

While Rangers did step up their game in the second half and went close to scoring a few times, the Gers really were poor for the goal that they conceded just before the break.

Nicolas Raskin stopped after tackling Matt O’Riley, allowing Daizen Maeda to ghost in and swing a great cross to the back post where Jota beat Rangers captain and right-back Tavernier to get a free header.

It went in.

And it proved to be the difference between the two sides.

BBC Scotland’s chief sports writer Tom English was following the match, and he noted just how bad 31-year-old Tavernier was.

English said on BBC Scotland: “There were four or five Rangers players culpable for the goal.

“A defensive lapse, switching off and James Tavernier’s positioning there was atrocious. He’s the captain and, when the ball is in the air, he doesn’t have a clue where Jota is.”
