Rangers urged to give Souness key role after Clement nod

Philippe Clement was appointed as Rangers manager with James Bisgrove and John Bennett enlisting a bit of help from Graeme Souness.

The Gers legend has been linked with a return to the club recently but, despite nothing coming from talks with the board, he was still more than willing to help find a replacement after Michael Beale was removed from his duties.

Acccording to former teammate Nigel Spackman, who was signed for Rangers by Graeme Souness, the vacant director of football post should be offered to the retired Sky Sports pundit, as told to The Daily Record.

Souness has been out of full-time football for a long while and the game has changed significantly.

Yes, he has a wealth of experience, but he doesn’t have any where Rangers need it specifically right now.

Rangers urged to add Graeme Souness in official capacity

Spackman feels that Rangers are missing a trick in not offering Graeme Souness whatever he wants though, as reported by The Daily Record:

“When it comes to the owners, I would be saying, ‘whatever Graeme wants us to do, let’s do it’. Graeme has a wealth of experience in football. He’s obviously been involved in football for his entire life at every single level.

“I think if you look at the last few years, recruitment has been poor and that is perhaps an area they might look at. It’s not about noticing the likes of Kylian Mbappe or Victor Osimhen at Napoli and seeing they are world class.

“It’s about searching in different markets and unearthing players who might not be the most expensive but can be polished up to do the business and then become assets. It’s a difficult process but that’s what Rangers have to aspire to and I’m sure Graeme can help in that respect.”

A director of football needs to have knowledge of modern data and scouting techniques as well as connections throughout the game to clubs, agents and other sporting directors.

There is a reason why figures like Paul Mitchell and Sam Jewell have been linked with the vacant post.

If Rangers appointed Graeme Souness, he would be a good figure head but he would be relying heavily on his staff and that’s not what we need.

Neither should someone who wanted Frank Lampard as boss be in control of the football department.

One of the key remits is negotiating with players, agents and clubs, it’s not the ‘90s anymore and Rangers don’t have a bottomless pit of money.

How Rangers involved Graeme Souness during Philippe Clement’s recruitment is exactly the sort of role he should have.

Be there for advice, guidance, to assess whether or not someone might have the right personal qualities for a job – but that’s it.

Yes, he has a wealth of experience, just not where we need it.
