Any football fan doesn’t need telling twice. The Famous Glasgow Rangers have as rich and illustrious a history as any football club on planet Earth. The club is iconic, historic and synonymous with success. There have been plenty of ups and downs. Plenty of trophies, and there has been a Rangers treble winning season seven times. The most in football history.
We’re the most successful club in football, even though we surrendered seven years for everyone else to catch up. And they still couldn’t.
And after years of trudging through the mire, there is real hope Steven Gerrard’s team can achieve the hallowed 55th title this season.
Considering where we have been, this would be an immense achievement by Steven Gerrard and his backroom staff. There’s certainly no complacency from the Rangers team and there’s a real understanding of the challenge ahead.
But if Gerrard could pull off the impossible, and not only win the league but also a Rangers treble, would it rank as the greatest achievement in Rangers’ history?
A different footballing world
Rangers have had some immense moments. From the European Cup Winners Cup win, to Jock Wallace’s two trebles in three years, to our 50th league title in 2003 or even the UEFA Cup Final in 2008. Who could forget Helicopter Sunday too? Or the countless Old Firm final victories. Winning the league at Celtic Park. The Advocaat treble.
We’ve not even mentioned 9IAR.
There’s been some special days over the years, but there’s no doubting football has changed since Rangers tumbled down to the bottom division.
Money reigns supreme, and our friends to the East have plenty of the stuff. Considering they’re just off the back of a Double Treble too, the mere notion that Rangers could pinch all three back off them would be laughed off by some.
Forget the treble…
Rangers are looking very strong, particularly at Ibrox, and have settled into a rhythm with Gerrard. There are options in every position and we have a squad capable of challenging on four fronts.
It might be absurd to think we could win all three domestic trophies and the Europa League, and it’s unlikely I’ll be betting my house on it anytime soon, but anything is possible.
If we got four it’d be undoubtedly the greatest moment in our history. I’m not getting carried away or anything, but what are the odds on that actually?
Forgetting the inevitable invasion of Baku in 2019, if Gerrard led Rangers to a first Rangers treble since 2003, it would be truly momentous.
The biggest in our history? Let’s just hope we get the chance to find out.
