Rangers have been linked with talented Bordeaux striker Josh Maja as Steven Gerrard steps up his hunt for a new striker.

According to Get French Football News – considered a generally reliable Twitter account – the Gers are targeting the former Sunderland striker and will “open talks” over a move next week.

Maja, 21, joined Ligue 1 Bordeaux in January 2019 after coming through the ranks at Sunderland and making a considerable impression at the Stadium of Light.

The Nigerian international striker was also at Sunderland’s Academy at the same time current Rangers forward Jermain Defoe was at Sunderland as the Black Cats’ number one striker.

This could be an exciting reunion with fans of Netflix series Sunderland Till I Die well aware of the talents this pacey young forward has in his locker.

The reported interest also comes at a time when Rangers have reportedly rejected a bid for talismanic striker Alfredo Morelos from Ligue 1 Lille.

Steven Gerrard made his position on the need for a new forward clear, even before there was talk of Morelos’ exit.

“Hopefully you will see some additions if we can pull off what we are trying to do in the transfer market,” said Gerrard [Daily Record].

“It was quite evident after the winter break, when we were getting suspensions or Jermain had his injuries, that we lacked a bit of firepower.
