Rangers’ stuttering 10-match away run laid bare as pressure mounts on Philippe Clement

Rangers fans are fuming following yet more away day disappointment in the Scottish Premiership after their team blew a two goal lead away to Hibs.

The Gers and the Hibees played out a frenetic 3-3 draw in Edinburgh, with Rangers slipping 13 points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership table as a result.

The result means Rangers are without a win on the road in three games in the Scottish Premiership, having won only three out of ten away matches this season.

But just how bad have things gotten under Philippe Clement on the road?

Here’s a review of Rangers’ away form this season with statistics that do not paint a pretty picture for the under-fire Ibrox manager.

Hearts 0-0 Rangers (03/08/24)

Rangers kicked off the season with a 0-0 Scottish Premiership draw away to Hearts at Tynecastle.

Philippe Clement, who’d just been handed a new contract on the eve of the trip to Edinburgh, described the stalemate as a ‘fair result’ with the club’s first half showing ‘not good enough’.

With the Jambos finishing 3rd last season, the Gorgie club would then go into freefall with Steven Naismith eventually losing his job.

Celtic 3-0 Rangers (01/09/24)

Rangers were swept away by Celtic in the first Old Firm derby of the Scottish Premiership season at Celtic Park.

Philippe Clement claimed that Rangers started as the ‘best team’ in the game but it counted for nothing come the final whistle.

Celtic eventually hammered Rangers in a confidence-sapping defeat thanks to goals from Daizen Maeda, Kyogo Furuhashi and Callum McGregor.

A Rangers fan was widely condemned in the aftermath of the result for hurling personal abuse at captain James Tavernier outside Ibrox.

Dundee United 0-1 Rangers (15/09/24)

Rangers finally got off to winning ways on the road in the Scottish Premiership with the narrowest of victories over Dundee United at Tannadice.

Tom Lawrence scored the only goal of the game in the 7th minute as Rangers bounced back from the Old Firm defeat and finally recorded three points away from home.

Philippe Clement described the win as a ‘big result’, insisting Tannadice is a ‘hard place to come to’.

Turns out so is every other stadium in Scotland.

Kilmarnock 1-0 Rangers (20/10/24)

Rangers fluffed their lines big time in a stuttering 1-0 defeat to Kilmarnock at Rugby Park which had the club’s supporters furious at full-time.

Marley Watkins scored a late winner to steal the points from a lacklustre Rangers side, Philippe Clement pointing to the surface come full time even if he admitted the performance was ‘not good enough’.

The result had shades of Michael Beale losing early on at Rugby Park last season and it’s from this point many Rangers started asking questions of Philippe Clement.

Aberdeen 2-1 Rangers (30/10/24)

Things would then go from bad to worse for Philippe Clement and Rangers’ away form as the team travelled to Pittodrie to face Aberdeen.

The Dons might be without a win in ten games now but back in October they were neck and neck with Celtic at the top of the table.

Ambitious talk of a title tilt has since been blown apart but Rangers found out they were in a tussle for second when Shayden Morris tapped home the winner.

Nicky Devlin had given Aberdeen the lead, with Nedim Bajrami scoring a stunning solo goal to equalise, with Philippe Clement jumping to the defence of his under-fire players come full-time

“It’s one of the better performances from this new squad,” Clement said. “But it was not good enough in the result.”

St Johnstone 0-1 Rangers (01/12/24)

Rangers then finally managed to record a second away win of the season when they travelled to face St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park.

On a particularly nervy afternoon, Rangers won the game thanks to a scrappy Jason Holt own goal to relieve some of the pressure which was building on Philippe Clement.

Claiming he was ‘satisfied’ at full-time, Philippe Clement lamented missed opportunities and praised his side for ‘not doing stupid things and not being naive’.

Ross County 0-3 Rangers (08/12/24)

Rangers then begun to build up a head of steam on the road in Scotland with the club’s best away day showing to date in the thumping 3-0 win over Ross County.

The emergence of Hamza Igamane saw the Moroccan net a stunning opener from the edge of the box, before second half goals from Danilo and James Tavernier secured the victory.

Philippe Clement has routinely referenced this result whenever he is grilled on the club’s abysmal away form and described the showing as a ‘huge performance’.

It was the be the pre-cursor to complete domestic collapse on the road.

St Mirren 2-1 Rangers (26/12/24)

Rangers fans had a renewed sense of optimism after Celtic dropped points to Dundee United and put the Ibrox club within nine points of Parkhead.

All the Gers had to do was overcome St Mirren and Motherwell before putting Celtic in their place at Ibrox and cutting the gap to six points heading into the rest of 2025. Easy, right?

Rangers put in a woeful first half display in Paisley which was summed by new father Jack Butland rushing out of his goal and giving away a needless penalty.

Danilo’s penalty box effort hauled Rangers back into the match but Caolan Boyd-Munce popped up with an injury-time winner to inflict a spirit-crushing defeat on the Gers.

If Rangers fans ever reflect on 24/25, this is the match that they’ll probably point to as having quashed any hope of a Premiership title challenge.

Philippe Clement claimed the first half performance made him ‘angry’ and tried to protect his players for their improved second half showing. It didn’t wash with fans.

Motherwell 2-2 Rangers (29/12/24)

Rangers could not afford to drop any more points before hosting Celtic at Ibrox and the Gers support expected a renewed performance against Motherwell.

What they got was yet another disastrous first-half display as Cyriel Dessers and Kieran Dowell were hooked at half-time with the team losing 2-0.

A Hamza Igamane double rescued a point for Rangers after Apostolos Stamatelopoulous and Tawanda Maswanshise had given the Steelmen a two-goal lead.

Philippe Clement claimed that his team ‘threw away the points’ at full-time and tried to justify his questionable team selection.

Hibs 3-3 Rangers (05/01/25)

Rangers then made it three away games in a row without a victory in the Scottish Premiership by blowing a two goal lead of their own against Hibs.

Hamza Igamane was in inspired form for Rangers at Easter Road, netting a first-half double to fire Rangers into a comfortable lead.

But after conceding a Martin Boyle goal before half-time, a questionable penalty allowed the Australian to score again in the second half with chaos ensuing thereafter.

Hamza Igamane slotted home a third to complete a perfect hat-trick with Rangers’ powderpuff defending powerless to resist Rocky Bashiri heading home a late equaliser.

Philippe Clement focused on the penalty award come full-time and suggested it was a ‘game-decisive’ decision which cost Rangers the points.

But for fed up Ibrox fans, it was another match on the road where a Rangers team lacked the competitive edge to get it over the line.
