Rangers’ journey over the last decade has been subject to a special Sky News podcast as the broadcaster dedicates their Daily Podcast to the Ibrox club.
The Gers are still celebrating that first title since the club’s financial collapse in 2012 with 55 the number on every Rangers supporter’s lips.
Sky journalist Dermot Murnaghan hosted the special Sky News Daily Podcast about the Ibrox side’s rise, fall, and return.
This comes after the Gers brushed off reported complaints from Sky regarding coverage in the aftermath of the club’s historic title victory.
Rangers gave Steven Gerrard exclusives to the likes of sporting rivals BT Sport and news rivals ITN in the week after 55 was secured, something which reportedly angered Sky [Guardian].
The message was that Sky haven’t made enough of an effort with either Rangers or Scottish football and they’ve got what they deserved, something evidenced by a cheeky comment from Gerrard to a glory-hunting Sky journalist.
But now Sky have endeavoured the give the club some pretty solid coverage with the impressive podcast including interviews with the likes of Price of Football’s Kieran Maguire, Heart & Hand host David Edgar, and Rangers managing director Stewart Robertson.
It also included clips and interviews from news stories of the day and ex-players.
It’s an interesting listen and certainly worth half an hour of your time – you can find it HERE.
But more pertinently it’s a sign that Sky have revaluated how they approach both Rangers and Scottish football and the Gers deserve credit for standing firm with the broadcaster.
The podcast was tweeted out repeatedly during its launch, sending it out to the Sky News account’s 7m followers; that’s more than the population of Scotland.
On top of this, Rangers striker Kemar Roofe joined Laura Woods and Ally McCoist on a Sky Sports Super 6 podcast discussing the striker’s time at Rangers and the ongoing issue of racism in football.
It just shows how standing your ground can help influence change and hopefully the broadcaster shows greater tact in its dealings with Rangers going forward.
Rangers were said to be “relaxed” over the dispute at the time and the club’s stance on it appears to have helped encourage a more mutually beneficial relationship.
