But as eyes glance all around for the next man to fill the Ibrox hotseat, the topic of compensation has a lack of clarity online.

Reports from the Telegraph that the fee was only £2m were rubbished by club insiders Heart & Hand during the week but how much can Rangers expect to rake in?

How much compensation will Rangers receive for Steven Gerrard?

Sky Sports are claiming that the figure sits between £3m and £4m – which is more than double the Telegraph’s claims – but club insiders are suggesting it’s even more.

Mark Dingwall – the editor of the Follow, Follow fanzine and a club media partner – has suggested the figure is in the ballpark of £4.5m.

This is a fee which is backed up by the 4th Official who have spent some time trying to rebuff lowballed suggestions which have appeared in the Scottish sports press.

Rincon Escoces are also claiming that Villa will need to part with £5m compensation to sign Steven Gerrard.

Whatever the case, Rangers need to move quickly to appoint a new manager with a series of complicated ties coming up after the international break.

Within a week, the Gers face a Premier Sports Cup semi-final against Hibs at Hampden, a decisive Europa League clash with Sparta Prague at Ibrox and a Premiership trip to Livingston.

The debate is raging over who is the best man or management team for the job but one man who’s a fans’ favourite has previously said he’d be interested in the gig.
