Rangers star Ianis Hagi has lauded Ibrox gaffer Steven Gerrard for the Scouser’s influence on his career to date – and in turn, proving he’s exactly where he needs to be amid transfer links out of Ibrox.
The talented Romanian attacking midfielder, 22, is routinely linked out of Ibrox with Hagi amongst the most prominent sportsmen in his native Romania.
It’s a natural by-product of his namesake and father Gheorghe, who is the country’s greatest ever footballer.
As a result, the likes of RB Leipzig, Sevilla, and Sampdoria have all been mentioned alongside Hagi but these comments highlight that as far as his development goes, there’s nowhere better than Ibrox for the talented star right now.
“When I came here I had a discussion with the manager and with Ross. So I knew what their plan was with me,” said Hagi [Glasgow Times].
“It was the same type of plan I was thinking about. You have seen in the last year or so that I have just got better as a player.
“I think I have got better not only on the pitch, but off the pitch as well. I’m just trying to get better every single day.
“I’m young so I will always try to improve my game and work on my game. I think everything that was built around me, the trust they have in me.
“So far so good. Hopefully, I can build on that and try to get better because that’s my objective.”
Whilst transfer links will likely persist, the well-spoken Romanian international seems focused and convinced that Rangers is the place to be for him right now.
The Ibrox side spent a reported £3m [STV] to bring the player to Glasgow this summer after an initially successful loan spell and he has developed into a player who delivers in big moments.
Whilst Rangers described the move as a “long-term deal” football stats website Transfermarkt believes the midfielder is contracted to Ibrox until 2024.
