Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor’s superiority over Celtic summer signing Vasilis Barkas has been shown by a remarkable Premiership stat.
McGregor returned to Ibrox for a second spell on a free transfer in 2018, while the Hoops spent £4.5m on Barkas in July 2020 [Scottish Sun].
Yet, it’s the Gers star who’s been by far the more impressive performer this season.
McGregor has been consistently excellent for Rangers since recovering from a minor early-season injury, while Barkas has looked nervy when between the sticks for Celtic.
In 19 league appearances, McGregor has kept 13 clean sheets and only conceded six goals. By comparison, Barkas kept six clean sheets in 13 appearances and conceded ten times before losing his place to Scott Bain.
Other factors are in play when it comes to the number of goals conceded by keepers, though, most notably the quality of the defence in front of them.
So it’s the difference in save percentage between the pair that really shows McGregor’s superiority.
The Ibrox star has saved 86% of the shots he’s faced this season, which is the highest percentage of any keeper in the league to have played a minimum of ten matches.

Barkas’ save percentage is much lower at 65.2, which is the tenth best return of the Premiership keepers to qualify.
Ibrox no.2 Jon McLaughlin’s percentage is an impressive 84.6 [FBRef] but he has only played nine times in the league and so doesn’t qualify for the list.
Gers loanee Robby McCrorie, who has struggled for minutes at Livingston in recent times has a disappointing save percentage of 55.3 [FBRef], while ex-Rangers player Jak Alnwick is second on the list with 78%.
McGregor was praised by supporters for his passionate interview following Rangers’ slip-up at Hamilton on Sunday and we discussed his influence in our weekly Round-Up Video on the Rangers News YouTube channel.
