Rangers star's Ibrox days surely numbered as double Gers swoop linked

Rangers star Jermain Defoe is surely fighting a losing battle to secure another year at Ibrox as the club reportedly close in on a double pre-contract striker swoop.

The Gers have been extensively linked to a range of strikers in the press already as we look ahead to next season but there are two players in particular reportedly close to an Ibrox move.

KV Oostende striker Fashion Sakala – who has 13 goals in the Belgian Pro League this season – continues to be linked to Ibrox in the Scottish press.

The latest report in the Daily Record claims that the Gers are closing in on a four-year deal for the striker with Ligue 1 club Lille also said to be interested.

The Gers are also said to be in discussions over a move for £15m Middlesbrough captain Britt Assombalonga, 28, who like Sakala is out of contract this summer [TEAMtalk].

At the moment Rangers have the likes of Alfredo Morelos, Kemar Roofe, Cedric Itten, and Jermain Defoe as forward options with the 38-year-old veteran probably fourth choice.

Should the club sign another two forward players this would surely push Defoe further down the pecking order in Glasgow.

Not only that but some reports have claimed that the ex-Spurs, West Ham, and Sunderland striker is also amongst the Gers’ top earners at Ibrox, with the poacher said to be earning in the region of £30k per week by Football Insider.

It would clearly not make sense to keep a player on such a lucrative salary around if he isn’t playing and should Rangers bring these two forwards to the club, they’ll expect game time.

At Defoe’s age too – if he wants to prolong his career – then the striker also needs guaranteed minutes and going by all these links it remains to be seen if he’ll get them in Glasgow.

Not that Defoe wants to move anywhere else as things stand – the popular forward has been clear that he wants at least one more season in front of the fans.
