Rangers star who put shackles on the £30m man earns plaudits of fans

As Rangers prepared to face Celtic this weekend much of the talk was about the inclusion of inexperienced centre-back Jack Simpson in the Ibrox XI.

The Gers defender was forced into only his second start in a Rangers shirt since his January move from Bournemouth following injuries to both Leon Balogun and Filip Helander.

The 24-year-old’s inclusion in the game would’ve been something John Kennedy’s floundering side would’ve hoped to target but as things transpired, Simpson stepped up and played.

Minus a harsh yellow card for an accidental forearm clash with Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard in the first half, the 6ft2 defender barely put a foot wrong and impressed at Ibrox.

For someone who signed on a free he certainly marshalled the £30m man very well and deserves all the plaudits he’s currently receiving from Gers fans. Albeit there was one moment where he lost posession to the Frenchman and almost cost a goal in the second half.

We spoke pre-match about this being an opportunity for Jack to stem the tide of some over-zealous criticism for his early Gers performances and going by the fan response on Twitter, he’s certainly done that.

Gers fans took to the social media platform to congratulate the defender for his role in the 4-1 demolition of our greatest rivals:

Rangers trounced Old Firm rivals Celtic 4-1 courtesy of a Kemar Roofe double, a powerful Alfredo Morelos effort and a late goal by Jermain Defoe.

The result was also the perfect opportunity for another under-fire Ibrox star to answer his critics with a Man of the Match performance in the game.
