Rangers star "very happy" to write history despite Premier League interest

Rangers full-back Borna Barisic has said he is “very happy” about writing himself into the Ibrox history books and has set his sights on smashing a 114-year-old record.

The Croatian is jetting out to join up with his international teammates for the UEFA Nations League matches after being a mainstay in the Rangers side which has kept six clean sheets in a row to open the season.

It stands as Rangers’ greatest ever defensive start to a Scottish top-flight season – beating Bill Struth’s five back in 29/30 – and matches the record set by Willie Maley’s Celtic team in 1906/07.

The Ibrox side could send out a strong message by keeping another clean sheet against Dundee United when they visit Ibrox in a fortnight and Barisic is determined to do so.

“It’s a very nice feeling,” said Barisic [Glasgow Times].

“We knew if we kept another clean sheet we would break the record so that was a motivation for us.

“Of course, our first priority was to win and the second one was to keep another clean sheet. Now we have written out own piece of history so I am very happy about that.

“It’s not just that we have been keeping clean sheets, but I think our opponents haven’t really created too many chances.

“There have been a couple, but not too many. I think it’s the best defensively since I’ve been here for sure.

“We are going to try and keep this record going for as long as possible, but the most important thing is to win the game.”

Barisic, 27, has been one of Rangers’ top performers this season with Steven Gerrard warning off the likes of Leeds United amid reported interest earlier in the transfer window.
