Rangers midfielder Steven Davis has praised the Ibrox support staff and dropped the biggest hint yet a new deal could be in the offing as he recovers from a serious knee injury.

The 38-year-old midfield maestro has suffered the worst injury of his extensive career and faces a tough road back to the Ibrox pitch given his age.

But that has not deterred the evergreen Ulsterman who remains determined to play for Rangers and Northern Ireland again as he looks to go out on a high after an illustrious career.

However, British football’s most-capped male player (140) will need to do enough to win a new Ibrox deal to do so, with Davo’s contract up come the end of the season.

Steven Davis eyes Rangers injury return

As Steven Davis provided his latest injury update, the midfielder was in positive spirits and hinted that even whilst injured, the end of the road is not yet nigh for the player at Rangers.

“I have to show a little more patience than I would usually like but it is progressing,” said Steven Davis [RangersTV].

“It is hard to see the progress day to day which is what I am finding frustrating but when you take it over a week to two-week basis then you can definitely see an improvement.

“I am very fortunate to be at a club like Rangers where we have the best staff in every department and the medical staff are no different.

“They will keep me right through the rehab and give me the best possible chance of achieving the dream of pulling on the jersey again.

“I feared the worst at the time as no one else around me in training was very innocuous so you have that fear and the scans then proved that was the case.

“I am very fortunate that is the first time I have had a long-term injury in my career. Previously the longest I have been out is three months so it is a new challenge for me.

“The club, the lads, my family and the staff have been brilliant with me and now I am doing everything I can to improve my condition.”

This would suggest that Steven Davis is hopeful of penning some kind of deal beyond the summer – although the details of which might be injury dependent – as he looks to make a miraculous Rangers comeback.

But whilst a new Ianis Hagi-type deal is perhaps unlikely, the Romanian signing up whilst crocked, after Davis’ years of service at Ibrox he at the very least deserves the chance to prove himself once again.

We’d be very surprised if the player’s time is up this summer.

Speaking of Ianis Hagi, the return of the Romanian to the starting XI is a welcome sight.
