Rangers forward Kemar Roofe is in the running for the UEFA Goal of the Season award, having been nominated alongside the likes of Man United and Tottenham stars Paul Pogba and Dele Alli.
Goals scored in any UEFA competition between October 2020 and July 2021 were eligible and the ten-goal shortlist was chosen by UEFA’s technical observers.
Roofe’s effort in a Europa League group stage clash against Standard Liege on 22 October 2020 has made the cut and it’s hardly a surprise.
With the game in injury time and the scoreline 1-0 to Rangers, the 28-year-old won the ball back not far from his own box before evading three opposition players in wet conditions and executing an inch-perfect strike from inside his own half.
It was a truly stunning effort which Steven Gerrard described as the best he’d ever seen live [Sky Sports].
Roofe’s goal is surely a leading contender, but there are some big names elsewhere on the list and a number of fantastic strikes.
Patrik Schick’s broadly similar effort for the Czech Republic against Scotland at Euro 2020 has made it, as has £89m Man United star Pogba’s stunning curling effort for France against Switzerland in the knockout stages of the same tournament.
Alli is also in contention for his bicycle kick for Spurs against Wolfsberg in the Europa League, while a brilliant team effort from Braga against Leicester City, which was finished off by Paulinho, is also in the running.
Fans will decide the winner and with the deadline set for 29 July, Roofe will be hoping Bears show him support by voting for his effort between now and then.
