When Rangers travel to Celtic on Sunday, Alfredo Morelos will be looking to make his mark.

It’s a shot at redemption for the 23-year-old forward after a disappointing outing against the Hoops at Hampden earlier in the month.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a Rangers fan who resents Morelos for his failure to score in the League Cup final.

After all, he’s been the difference for Gerrard’s side on countless occasions this season, with Boxing Day just the most recent in a long line of examples. With 28 club goals for the campaign, El Bufalo doesn’t owe anyone anything.

However, as could be seen in his celebration against Young Boys, which was the game after the defeat to Celtic, he feels a certain amount of personal responsibility.

Morelos saw a penalty saved by Fraser Forster while he failed to convert a host of other opportunities at the national stadium, ensuring his drought against the other half of the Old Firm continued.

Come Sunday afternoon, he needs to put past failings aside and focus on the present.

That might be easier said than done due to the scrutiny surrounding him, but this is a potentially defining clash for the Gers.

Defeat at Parkhead this weekend would be a third Old Firm reverse of the season and would open up a sizeable gap heading into the winter break.

Conversely, a draw or a win for Rangers would see them stay within touching distance while still holding a game in hand.

As the focal point of the side, Morelos is central to the hopes of getting a positive result.

Whether it’s a snapshot from the edge of the area, a header from a cross, a one-on-one finish or even a spot-kick, Steven Gerrard will be hoping his main man will strike a decisive blow.
