Rangers attacking midfielder Ianis Hagi has been linked with a move to both La Liga outfit Sevilla and Serie A side Lazio after an impressive season in Glasgow.
The Romanian, 22, is certainly not the finished product but we’ve seen throughout the campaign the son of legendary midfielder Gheorghe has the ability to be a matchwinner.
There are games when Hagi drifts in and out of the action but his ability to turn the game on its head should not be understated and neither should his young age.
Once touted as one of Europe’s leading wonderkids, Hagi’s career might have taken a few mazy twists in the past but he’s certainly on course to recognise his talent via Ibrox.
There’s no intimation from camp Hagi that the player wants to leave and for all intents and purposes the midfielder appears to have found a home at Ibrox in his early career despite only being here for 15 months.
A teenage breakthrough at his father’s club Viitorul Constanta was followed by a move to Italy with Fiorentina which possibly came too early for the player who was back in Romania before long.
A trip to Genk then followed and Hagi was once again in and out of Belgian side before Rangers came a-calling.
Despite perhaps struggling domestically last season – minus that wonderful volley late on against Hibs – Hagi began to find his feet in Glasgow.
His inspiring double in the comeback Europa League win over Braga famously heralded the comments of “Ibrox baby, it’s just different” come the final whistle.
Hagi Jnr got an inspired double to haul Rangers to a 3-2 victory after the club had fallen 2-0 down whilst Hagi Snr watched on in the crowd.
In that moment everyone realised that Rangers was the next step and best place for Hagi to find that confidence which has lacked throughout his early career.
Now with Sevilla reportedly interested [Fichajes] and Lazio said to be readying a £11.2m (€13m) bid [Sport.ro], there are already some Rangers fans considering the move.
You can’t help but feel Hagi is not yet at the end of his journey at Ibrox and there is still a level for him to go before he leaves Glasgow.
But in football money talks and perhaps a premature exit for Hagi might be dictated by market forces rather than his current status in Glasgow.
A leading executive linked to the midfielder also appeared to confirm the reported interested in the talented Gers midfielder this week.
