Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor was the hero for the side in last night’s second leg Europa League tie against Red Star Belgrade and he has been chosen as player of the week for the SofaScore Team of the Week with a score of 9.0.

Red Star started well and opened the scoring early on through Mirko Ivanic as the side looked to gain a stranglehold on the tie.

If it wasn’t for McGregor’s heroics, then it could have well been a three or four-goal lead for the Serbian champions at halftime.

A Ryan Kent goal with just over half an hour remaining was more than enough to see the last 16 tie out despite the home side scoring a late penalty to win the match.

There is no doubt McGregor has had some poor moments this season, with a variety of mistakes on league duty costing the Ibrox side vital points in the title chase.

But when it comes to Europe, he becomes a different player, and he more than made up for his recent mistakes last night.

With his performance surely giving Giovanni van Bronckhorst something to think about regarding the 40-year-olds contract, which is due to expire at the end of the season.

Many older fans from a different generation hail Andy Goram as the greatest Rangers keeper, but McGregor has been doing it on the big stage at a much older age.

Let’s just enjoy the fact he is still performing and if he does leave the side at the end of the campaign, it will prove to be a tough test for Gio to adequately replace him.

In other news, Rangers could benefit from future Champions League changes.
