Rangers star compared to £173m superstar for evolution of playing style

Rangers legend Ally McCoist believes that Ibrox striker Alfredo Morelos is playing a similar role for the Gers as what Tottenham superstar Harry Kane is for Spurs.

England captain Kane has been coming deep and playing more for the benefit of the team in Jose Mourinho’s high-flying side who find themselves top of the English Premier League this season.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ live coverage of the match with Aberdeen [22/11/20], McCoist praised El Bufalo for his selfless performances of late and compared the role of the two at Rangers and Spurs respectively.

But just how accurate was this depiction from McCoist?

Both Spurs and Rangers top their domestic leagues and both players have generally been talismanic for their sides over the years.

Morelos has saved his best form for the Europa League where he has four goals and two assists in six games this season.

On home soil, things haven’t gone quite to plan for the wee man but as McCoist alluded to Morelos has been coming deeper to allow that wicked Rangers movement to flourish in behind.

His three goals and two assists in eleven games is a return we’re not used to and Morelos himself cut a dejected figure as he exited the pitch in the 4-0 win over Aberdeen.

Harry Kane, in contrast, has been both scoring and assisting in high volumes across all competitions with Spurs.

Kane’s impressive return of 11 assists – a figure only slightly behind the 13 combined assists of the three seasons previously – have been supplemented with 13 goals.

All in only 15 games this season.

Whilst both players are certainly playing in deeper roles for their clubs this season, there’s a reason why one of them is valued £173m and one of them is frustrated at being subbed.

Away from comparing Morelos to Kane, McCoist has also been earning the plaudits of Rangers fans for his coverage of the Ibrox side in the 4-0 win over Aberdeen.
