Rangers star Joe Aribo has called for more protection from referees after a glass bottle was thrown at Borna Barisic by a Hibernian fan.

The 23-year-old has been increasingly influential for the Gers since being shifted from central midfield to the attacking right position, and he starred in a 3-0 win at Easter Road on Friday night.

The Gers were excellent in the capital, but the gloss was taken off the win by a horror tackle from Ryan Porteous and yet another instance of a missile being thrown at a player from the stands.

It appears to be an increasingly prevalent problem and given that the bottle was apparently thrown from 30 rows back, it could have caused real damage had it struck Barisic.

“Yeah, that’s not what you want to see,” said Aribo. “But, the referees have to help us in that situation and we need some looking after on the pitch in that situation, because what can we do when glass bottles are thrown at us.”

The incident was widely condemned after the game, with Hibs vowing to catch the culprit through a review of CCTV footage [Sky Sports].
